While the accounting industry continuously changes, there is plenty of expert insight that has remained relevant through the years, and the lessons that many professionals learned decades ago can guide young accountants in their practice today. In an article by the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA), “Four Lessons CPAs Learned from Early Jobs,” Partner Wendy On shared insight on the importance of networking and flexibility, a lesson she learned in her first job that she has held tightly to throughout her career.

Wendy discussed how the company she first started her career off in closed during the post-9/11 recession, leaving her unemployed and requiring her to pivot and adapt. She revealed that having professional contacts was key to her success in a very competitive market. “Things are constantly changing and there may be events that are beyond your control that will affect you personally and professionally,” Wendy shared. “You have to learn to be able to adjust to change and retool if necessary.”
