As Americans begin filing their 2021 returns, there are several reasons they may not see refunds as they have in the past. As reported in Yahoo! News and GoBankingRates, benefits provided in the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act may come back to haunt some taxpayers. Other issues facing the country, including a rise in identify theft, can also result in very lengthy delays in getting tax refunds, explained Partner Steven Jager.
“When someone files a tax return electronically using someone’s Social Security number (illegitimately), and then the ‘real’ tax return is filed legitimately, it is rejected,” he said. “It must then be filed on paper and manually processed after the identity theft is investigated. It is a lengthy process and refunds can take a VERY long time to be received. We actually had a case where the refund of nearly a million dollars was just finally received on a tax return filed some years ago.”
